Part of the WoW mission is to raise funds to provide scholarships for girls to ski race. In keeping with this mission an annual WoW Scholarship of $1000 has been given to a deserving girl since the 2016-2017 season. After much deliberation and research the scholarship committee worked with the Mount Mansfield Ski Club and the Mount Mansfield Winter Academy to determine how the scholarship would have the most impact upon an aspiring young racer. The following criteria are considered when choosing such a recipient:
• Financial need as established by the MMSC and/or MMWA
• Enrolled in the 7th or 8th grade either in public or private school
• Motivation to reach her highest potential as a student and athlete
• Exhibit positive social and emotional skills when relating to peers and adults
We are very pleased that the young woman who received the first scholarship for the 2016-2017 season and again for the 2017-2018 season continues to achieve great success in both her ski racing and academics. The MMWA reported in May 2019 that she will be entering her third year at the academy where she is an excellent student earning straight A's and has become a stellar member of this community with her sense of humor and positive attitude. She also had great results ski racing qualifying for the Eastern Championships. She was recognized at the end of the season with the Gutstein Family Scholarship that is presented to a student athlete who attends the Academy and shows great commitment and potential.
The second girl who first received the WoW Scholarship for the 2018-2019 season has earned another $1000 grant for the 2019-2020 season. She is reported to be a bright and determined young lady, always adding to the team with her smile and humor. She was a first year U14 and was one of the top racers in that age group while also staying on track academically. At the end of the season she was recognized with the George Tormey Scholarship presented to an athlete who displays a love of the sport and shows potential as a ski racer. She hopes to enter the Academy next year as a full time student athlete.
WoW is very pleased to have taken a small part in the success and growth of both young ladies. Thank you to all who generously donated to the scholarship fund. Hopefully we can expand our giving in the future.
